30 November 2018, Geneva: When Education Becomes a Victim of Conflict - Preventing Lost Generations
The Graduate Institute, Geneva in cooperation with the EU Delegation to the UN and other international organisations organised a panel discussion on the topic: “When Education Becomes a Victim of Conflict – Preventing Lost Generations” on 30 November 2018 at the Maison de la paix (Auditorium Ivan Pictet A). Given NORRAG’s involvement on the topic of Education in Fragility, the Graduate Institute asked Joost Monks, NORRAG Executive Director, to moderate the session.
When a conflict or natural disaster erupts, education is often one of the first services interrupted. Today nearly 75 million school-aged children (3-18 years old), who are living in 35 crisis-affected countries, experience disruption to their education. The impact of education on resilience, peace and development has been clearly established. Yet, education is the most chronically underfunded sector in crises, accounting for less than 3 per cent of total global funding for humanitarian aid. This event aims to raise attention to the importance of education for children in conflict and displacement and discuss ways to ensure that these boys and girls will not become a ‘lost generation’.
