NORRAG and Teachers College, Columbia University co-organised a workshop about the recently signed Abidjan Principles on 5 April 2019 at Teachers College in New York with Sylvain Aubry from the Global Initiative for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.

On 13 February 2019, the Abidjan Principles on the human rights obligations of States to provide public education and to regulate private involvement in education were adopted in Côte d’Ivoire, following a three-year participatory consultation and drafting process. This landmark text promises to provide guidance on the right to education in the context the current debates on privatization in education policies, by reviewing what existing human rights law say about the role of the State and private actors in the delivery of education.

This talk gave an overview of the unique process that led to the adoption of this milestone text, and review some of the key aspects of the Principles: is there a right to public education? What should education regulations look like? Are there any limitations to public-private partnerships, like charters schools? How can the Abidjan Principles change the way we think about these issues and make a difference for education policies?
