UNESCO Futures of Education Initiative Seeking Comments/Suggestions for Newly-Released Progress Update Document

COVID-19 has reinforced the importance of reflection and action on the futures of education. The world has become increasingly aware that alternative futures are possible and it is thus all the more urgent to reimagine the ways education can shape the future of humanity and the planet.

For more than a year, UNESCO’s Futures of Education initiative has been catalyzing a global debate on how education, learning and knowledge need to be re-thought in a world of increasing complexity, uncertainty, and fragility. This consultation has engaged nearly a million people already and has helped to inform the Report that the International Commission on the Futures of Education is in the process of preparing.

The Commission has now released a Progress Update document that provides background information on the initiative and its ambitions, the provisional outline of the report, and an explanation of the main points and arguments currently envisioned for each section and sub-section. They invite comments and suggestions — particularly around:

a) the coherence of the arguments presented

b) what elements need further attention, development or are missing, and

c) what is most novel and promising about the forthcoming Report as currently envisioned.

This Progress Update document is available in ArabicEnglishFrench and Spanish. Views and ideas may be submitted either through our online feedback platform or sent by email to futuresofeducation@unesco.org (in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Spanish or Russian) by 30th April 2021

All inputs will be carefully reviewed and feed into the preparation of the forthcoming global Report on the futures of education (to be launched in November this year on the occasion of UNESCO’s 41st General Conference).
