Event Highlights: NORRAG at CIES 2023: "Improving Education for a More Equitable World"

The NORRAG team participated in the Comparative and International Education Society (CIES) Annual Conference on 14-22 February 2023, both online and in-person in Washington D.C., USA. This year’s CIES Conference theme “Improving Education for a More Equitable World” spoke to NORRAG’s mission and key principles. During the conference, we highlighted knowledge equity through our #TheSouthAlsoKnows initiative. NORRAG representatives also spoke at ten panels across four NORRAG themes, and organised its traditional CIES reception on 21 February 2023.

Impact Bonds for Education: Does innovation in financing address equity and quality challenges?

Impact bonds, a financial innovation that aims to address social and development issues through private investment, are increasingly gaining prominence as a tool for financing education. However, as with any new financial instrument, there are both benefits and challenges associated with impact bonds. At a recent panel, experts discussed the existing evidence on the use of impact bonds in education and engaged the audience in examining their own assumptions about the topic.

 

Innovative Financing for Tertiary Education in Sub-Saharan Africa

Financial innovations in tertiary education funding have long been explored as an avenue to increase access and decrease inequity in post-secondary education.  A recent panel session at the Comparative and International Education Society Annual Meeting engaged researchers and practitioners in a critical dialogue on how student financing initiatives, coupled with additional financial literacy and employment support, have the potential to address the key tertiary education access and equity challenges in Sub-Saharan Africa. Chaired by Arushi Terway (NORRAG), the panel titled “Innovative Financing for Tertiary Education in Sub-Saharan Africa” presented findings from research and implementation of tertiary education student financing initiatives within the Innovative Financing for Education To Leave No One Behind project.

The rise of knowledge brokers: The translation of research evidence into policy and planning

The KIX EAP Hub presented at NORRAG’s two-part panel ‘The rise of knowledge brokers: The translation of research evidence into policy and planning’ on 21 February and 22 February 2023 at the 67th Annual Conference of the Comparative and International Education Society (CIES) in Washington, D.C. This panel gave the floor to experts from academe, international organizations, and foundations that in one way or another attempt to bridge research and policy.

 

Systems approaches to improving the use of research evidence in education policy, planning and practice

Panel Session: Research Approaches to Globalization & Education

Anna Numa Hopkins, Theme Lead Data and Evidence, and Moira Faul, Executive Director, presented on evolving understandings of how best to mobilise research and improve its use in education policy and practice. They started from the challenge of two broken feedback loops in international education: one between knowledge producers and users, and the second between global supply and local demand.
