1st Roundtable - Philanthropic and CSR support for the Right to Education Act: A Platform for discussion and research
As part of the Philanthropy in Education Symposium Series, NORRAG and India Development Foundation (IDF), with support from Dr. V Santhakumar (Azim Premji University) organised the first roundtable “Philanthropic and CSR support for the Right to Education Act: A Platform for discussion and research” in New Delhi, India, on 27 April 2018.

The Roundtable was the second event in the Philanthropy in Education Series after the opening Symposium in Geneva on 22-24 November 2017. The roundtable was the initial meeting bringing key stakeholders (including donors, implementing partners, government and academicians) together to engage in dialogue on lessons learned, issues, challenges, and way forward for philanthropic actors to engage in supporting equitable quality elementary education in India. Over the next two years, further meetings will be held in other major hubs in India (Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kolkata) to expand the discussion further and engage a larger group of actors.
This initiative aims to facilitate dialogue, research, and stakeholder collaboration for engagement of philanthropic actors in supporting the Right to Education Act (RTE) in India. Functioning as honest knowledge brokers, NORRAG and IDF, aim to foster an ecosystem in India for collaboration between philanthropy and education stakeholders to develop and share knowledge on supporting RTE and elementary education.
India has a long history of philanthropic giving for education, and the recent CSR law has introduced newer actors and modes of engagement for private actors within the education sector. The recent evolution in the types of philanthropic actors and models of engagement in the country provides an opportune window for dialogue and examination of the role of philanthropic actors in supporting the right to education.

Agenda:
Short presentation of background research and data and facilitated discussion on the following:
- Critical and differentiated examination of the models and role of philanthropic engagement to support RTE.
- Examination of good practices and enabling conditions for philanthropic engagement to ensure the provision of equitable quality education.
- Identification of existing gaps in research and data on philanthropic engagement, opportunities, challenges, and successes.
- Identify and commit to knowledge sharing and sustain collaborative discussion and action.
- Exploration of potential avenues that consider complementarity and seek strategic collaboration between stakeholders (including donors, implementing partners, government and academics) to align efforts in the provision of equitable quality elementary education.
